Water Pipes for Nicaragua

The LATA Foundation is providing a mile of water pipes and is appealing for support to fund two more miles of pipes.

The pipes are needed for project to provide clean drinking water to over one thousand people in the impoverished community of La Prusia, located southwest of the city of Granada in Nicaragua.

“We announced this project at the PooFest music festival in September.” says David Gilmour, LATA Foundation chairman. “ The PooFest raised the funds to provide and install a water pump to kick start the project. The water pump is part of bigger plan to replace an antiquated, inefficient and unreliable water system which will require 3 miles of pipes and a second pump.”

Angel Saenz Badillos of local NGO Casas de la Esperanza comments: “Thanks to your support the thousand residents  will soon have a steady, regular water supply.  They will be able to drink clean water, cook, wash, do the laundry and to send their children to school wearing clean clothes.”

Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, where almost half of the population currently live below the poverty line on less than US$1 per day. 79% live on less than $2 a day.

“A mile of pipes costs £2030,” explains David.  “There are 5,280 feet in a mile.  So a donation of £10 will provide 26 feet of pipes, £20 purchases 52 feet. It will only take two hundred and three donations of £10 to help us purchase another mile and it might make an unusual Christmas present for someone special. A generous sponsor might like to contribute £500 for a quarter of a mile. The LATA Foundation will provide certificates.”

Please Note: Additional funds raised by the PooFest have been allocated towards other water projects in Mexico. Every two or three weeks the filters on the water fountains constructed by local NGO New Life Mexico need to be changed. New Life Mexico have constructed 15 water houses in Puerto Vallarta since 2010. The LATA Foundation water fountain is one of two in public places (the others are in schools) and is being used by 500 people every day.
