Mexico Drinking Fountain

Clean drinking water in Puerto Vallarta - a fountain used by 500 people every day

We are proud to support the work of New Life Mexico in helping to provide clean water in Puerto Vallarta. In March 2011 we funded the construction of a water house in a secure location outside a medical clinic in Puerto Vallarta. It is one of 15 such water houses that New Life Mexico has constructed since 2010, ours and one other located in public places, the others in local schools.

Most people in this area of the city live below the poverty line. They do not have access to clean water and cannot afford bottled water. Over 500 people use the medical centre every day and often have to wait for hours to be seen.

The fountain design is tried and tested and yields 1,168,000 glasses of water per year. The fountain has 6 spouts and can fill around 1,000 bottles every day. Each new water house costs £3300 (which included the first year's maintenance and filters). A water engineer visits the fountains regularly to ensure that they are maintained properly and working well. Filters need to be changed every 2-3 weeks, depending on usage. On average, filters costs around £750 per annum per fountain.

Thanks to the fantastic fundraising from the PooFest, the Pootings music festival, we will be able to continue to support New Life Mexico water projects by supplying filters and maintenance to help provide clean water to hundreds of people every day.

New Life Mexico also provides practical hygiene and health education programmes, support for street children and drug rehabilitation projects. In addition they are supplying front-line training to give people new skills from which to generate an income in a new sewing school set up with LATA Foundation support.

In addition to the PooFest, we are grateful to members of LATA, the residents of Crockham Hill, the Mexican Tourism Board, Brady Travel Guides, Chimu Adventures and to the Rotary Club of Sherborne Castles for their support for our Mexico projects.

We would also like to thank Isabelle Mazille of Journey Latin America for introducing us to New Life Mexico. It is a great example of what the travel industry is doing to put something back into the region.

If you would like to make a donation or set up a monthly direct debit to support our work, please click onto our Donations pages or go to www.justgiving.com/lata.
