Conservation in the Galapagos

A water conservation and native gardens project on Floreana to support endemic species

The LATA Foundation has teamed up with The Tribes Foundation to support a ground-breaking new project in conjunction with the highly-respected Galapagos Conservation Trust (GCT). It is part of $1.7m long-term, multi-layered plan to support water conservation and restore Floreana by eliminating non-endemic plants, the first time such a project has been attempted on an inhabited island.

The GCT is working with the Charles Darwin Foundation and the local population of 130 to address the problems associated with non-native species of plants and to encourage the planting of endemic species in gardens. This project is running in tandem with a water conservation project and like many of our projects it is not expensive to support.

The Tribes Foundation is a UK charity which was set up by the directors of Tribes, the Fair Trade Travel™ company (and member of the Latin America Travel Association) in 2003.  The principle aim of the Tribes Foundation is to relieve the poverty of indigenous communities in areas outside of the UK which are affected by tourism.  Registered Charity No. 1101766.
