Projects » Water Project in Nicaragua
The LATA Foundation is providing a mile of water pipes and is appealing for support to fund two more miles of pipes for this project to supply clear water to a community of over 1,000 people near Granada. Each mile costs £2030.
Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, second only to Haiti. Almost half of the population lives below the poverty line on less than $1 per day. A staggering 79% live on less than $2 a day.

Further information
The LATA Foundation has already delivered and installed a water pump to supply clean drinking water to a thousand people in an impoverished area southwest of the city of Granada. Housing, education, jobs and health care are all pressing issues that the local NGO, Asociación Casas de la Esperanza, has identified which need to be addressed. But the most urgent of them all is safe, clean water.
“We announced this project at the PooFest music festival in September.” says David Gilmour, LATA Foundation chairman. “ The PooFest raised the funds to provide and install a water pump to kick start the project. The water pump is part of bigger plan to replace an antiquated, inefficient and unreliable water system which will require 3 miles of pipes and a second pump.”
Angel Saenz Badillos of local NGO Casas de la Esperanza comments: “Thanks to your support the thousand residents will soon have a steady, regular water supply. They will be able to drink clean water, cook, wash, do the laundry and to send their children to school wearing clean clothes.”

“A mile of pipes costs £2030,” explains David. “There are 5,280 feet in a mile. So a donation of £10 will provide 26 feet of pipes, £20 purchases 52 feet. It will only take two hundred and three donations of £10 to help us purchase another mile and it might make an unusual Christmas present for someone special. A generous sponsor might like to contribute £500 for a quarter of a mile. The LATA Foundation will provide certificates.”
